Bundling basics for cold weather

bundle-up-graphic-IKids enjoy playing outside during cold and snowy weather and “they’ll stay out longer,” said Dr. Joanna Gudel, a Marshfield Clinic pediatrician, “if they keep warm and dry.”

Gudel recommends following these bundling basics for cold weather clothing when dressing kids to play outdoors.

  • Dress in layers
  • Cover heads and necks
  • Wear mittens or gloves
  • Put on lined and waterproof boots

“When choosing clothing fabrics, avoid cotton,” Gudel said. “Natural fibers don’t wick moisture away.”

Cover head to toe

Choose synthetic fiber undergarments for the first layer; a knit middle layer for insulation which can be removed if the child gets too warm; and a synthetic fabric outer layer to block wind. Try wool, a good old-fashioned insulator, as a second layer that works well for sweaters, socks and mittens.

“Snowsuits should repel water and wind,” Gudel said. “If your family’s outdoor play area is a car-ride away, put snowsuits on when you arrive. Bulky snowsuits worn while in a car seat can interfere with the seat’s buckling system.”

Check boot size every year. Boots should be large enough that toes can wriggle.

Always check air temperature and wind chill. Children get colder faster than adults and proportionately lose more heat through their heads.

“Despite the cold, the sun can still damage young skin,” Gudel said. “Apply sunscreen and use petroleum jelly to prevent cheeks and lips from chapping.”
