From bedridden to walking: One young patient’s story

All Jacob Hasler had was a bruise on his abdomen. He had gotten it earlier in the day while playing sports. His mom, Jean Hasler, did not think anything of it.

Within a week the bruise was gone, but the spot still hurt and Jacob started to twitch. This twitch got worse. Jacob’s mom grew concerned and took him to the emergency department in Stevens Point, but everything looked fine. No broken bones or internal injuries.

Three more weeks passed and Jacob’s family grew more concerned as the twitch got worse. Jacob could no longer stand or walk. This is when they took him to the emergency department at Marshfield Children’s Hospital in Marshfield, Wisconsin. That day he saw Dr. Victoria Viegut, a pediatrician at Marshfield Children’s. She talked with Dr. Jill Meilahn, a Marshfield Children’s pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist who finally had answers.
