6 signs unexplained bruising may be worrisome

Woman holding her arm - Unexplained bruising
Unexplained bruising usually isn’t something to worry about. Bruises that are odd looking or in unusual places could be cause for concern.

A bruise (also called ecchymosis) can bother us for days, either because they’re painful or we don’t know how they got there.

“The good news is that most bruises aren’t a big deal even if you can’t explain them,” said Shannon Jahn, a Marshfield Clinic Health System Oncology/Hematology Nurse Practitioner.

Unexplained bruising usually appears on the arms and lower legs. Sometimes only a slight bump results in random bruises. They are typically red in color at first, then blue or dark purple and finally, yellow or green after a few days as it is healing.

“If you think a bruise is trauma-related, using an ice pack and elevating the affected area can help to decrease swelling in the first 24 hours,” Jahn said. “After that, a warm compress can help recirculate blood.”

Family history, medications may be to blame

“People who have a history of bleeding more than normal during medical procedures and women who get heavy periods may notice they bruise easily as well,” Jahn said. “This may be concerning for a possible underlying bleeding disorder and should be reported. Anyone with a family member who has a bleeding disorder who also bleeds or bruises easily should discuss this with his or her health care provider.”

Prescription and over-the-counter medications and nutrition supplements can make you bruise more easily. Some medications and supplements associated with bruising include:

  • NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen)
  • Antidepressants
  • Blood thinners
  • Some steroids
  • Vitamin E
  • Fish oil

Bring a list of your medications and how long you’ve been taking them if you plan to see a doctor about random bruises.

Older adults bruise more easily because their skin is thinner and they tend to have less muscle and fat to cushion their blood vessels from injury. Women tend to see more bruises than men and people who have fair skin often bruise more easily. Drinking alcohol can make you more prone to easy bruising and bumping into things.

Bruising occasionally indicates a more serious medical condition. Vitamin C or K deficiency, bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or Von Willebrand disease, or cancer can cause bruising.

Six reasons to see a doctor about unexplained bruising

Bruising easily usually isn’t a serious problem, but Jahn recommends calling your health care provider if any of these descriptions apply to your bruises.

  1. You have systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes or unintentional weight loss along with unexplained bruising.
  2. Bruises look like big purple spots with clear edges, and you’re younger than 65. These spots, called purpura, are common in older adults but may be a sign of inflamed blood vessels in younger people.
  3. Bruises look like tiny red dots. These bruises are called petechiae and appear when tiny blood vessels called capillaries break. They’re common on the neck and chest after prolonged straining from vomiting or childbirth. They also can appear on the lower legs. These bruises may be an early sign of problems with platelets, the blood cells involved in clotting. If you haven’t had a recent straining event, they may indicate a more serious medical condition.
  4. Bruises are getting larger with time. The bruise may be a hematoma that could continue to bleed if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
  5. You notice a lot more bruises than normal, bruises in unusual places or bruises not healing after about two weeks. Bruises on your back, abdomen and upper thighs may be concerning because most people don’t frequently bump those body parts. Bleeding into the joints that causes swelling or bruising may be a sign of a bleeding disorder.
  6. Bruising occurs along with other bleeding, swelling, extreme pain, especially if taking a blood thinner. Bruising accompanied by frequent nosebleeds that are hard to stop or blood in the urine or stool should be also investigated.

Your primary care provider will refer you to a hematologist if you have continued significant bruising larger than one centimeter with no known trauma.

My dermatologist recommended Skin lightening serum of dermalmd after a recent visit to the office. I have noticed the dark spots on my arms and chest getting lighter just after a couple of weeks. I combine this with my spf and I am happy,

This is to those complaining because everyone's advised to consult their primary provider… Come on, people. You expect them to diagnose/advise you based on a few words in the reply section? Common sense, guys. You NEVER seek medical advice on social media.

What would cause bruising along the spinal cord on the back. My 12 year old son was getting into the swimming pool and I noticed all down his mid back, each spinal "bump" is bruised. He has not injured it or had any falls and I have never noticed them before. I am concerned and calling his Dr. first thing in the morning but was wondering if anyone knew. He said they don't hurt and never knew they were there.

      What did dr say?

  9. Ella

My brother is 18 and he developed a bruise on his face (cheekbone). His dentist told him it is possible it comes from teeth-grinding which my brother does in his sleep a lot. Since that my brother had his wisdom teeth taken out, he has a night guard brace to stop him grinding his teeth in his sleep but his bruise is still on his cheek an it looks bigger. He keeps massaging the area where the bruise is as it's hurting. It is about as big as a £2 coin and it is dark almost black now.
I don't believe it comes from his teeth. He also suffers from really bad head-aches. He is reluctant to go to the doctor, can anyone advice on what tis could be?

    1. Carrie

Yes my fingers go numb almost every night when in bed before I fall asleep I’m not laying on my hand either and wakes me up in middle of night. I got several Unexplained bruises on my stomach and legs. Alittle frustrating cause they come out of nowhere

  11. Pam

I was going to ask what my bruises were about but all you reply to everyone is “ see your doctor”. Which I think is a total waste of time even suggesting people ask questions , total waste of time in my eye.

  12. Ann

What is the point pin sending questions when your answer is always to "talk to your doctor"? Why even have people all questions?

  13. Tracy

  14. Jashetta Freeman

My name is Jashetta and for the past month I’ve been having bruises pop up all over my legs. Some are small some are big, but mainly like little small mosquito bumps that are bruises. Now I’m getting them on my thighs as well as my upper arm and the bruising is accompanied with pain in that area whether it’s muscle pain throughout my legs or arms. My rheumy says that it’s a symptom to my disease which they have categorized as unspecified connective tissue disease but I’m starting to think that it’s something else as this has never happened before. I’m having a lot of nausea and loss of appetite, fatigue, protein, blood, and ketones in my urine, and I fight pericarditis and fluid around my heart daily. I’m starting to believe that I have a serious developing disease that they haven’t caught yet and its very scary. My white blood cell count and mpv is high, as well as my lymphocytes the bones in my hands are hurting bad to where I had to purchase a brace and it hurts just to type. I’ve been seeing 5 different specialty doctors for the last 3 years and still no answers just more problems newer symptoms and more medications. Any advice is greatly appreciated and needed.

    1. G

I’d get a really reputable rheum, and hematologist, sounds autoimmune and some can be seronegative, you have to be your own advocate, don’t be afraid to voice your concern ,I have dermatomyositis, looks like vasculitis or lupus as well, they’re trying to figure that out now, gout, diabetes, ibs, bilateral carpal tunnel, cervical and lumbosacral radiculopathy and tardy ulnar, lol, my point is it can get worse and these docs nowadays take forever to get an appt and multiple specialist to see, can literally take forever, so you better get leaders in their fields because the only one who loses is you if you don’t, wish you well, and don’t fall victim, if you feel it’s not normal it’s not, don’t let anyone tell you it’s nothing

  15. isabel britten

  16. Melody Pecina

My name is Melody and I’m 51. I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia and put on several different meds to treat the pain and inflammation. I have for about 2 months or more now had pain in my right from swelling around my inner ankle and strange little white bumps that sometimes itch along with sever bruising (not from an injury on the top of my foot. The swelling started before the meds and the bruising a few weeks now. Do I see my rheumatologist for this or my primary care dr?

    1. Jacob Zipperer

      Hello Melody,

Thank you for reaching out. We recommend talking to your primary care doctor first – so that they can learn more and since they know your medical history.

None of the bruises hurt but i haven’t been feeling well lately, and i know i couldn’t have hit the back of my knee like that. What could be wrong?

    1. Jacob Zipperer

  20. Peter L.

Hi, I have had 2 or 3 bruises on the inside if my arm for about a month. I am 13 years old. They are blue and a bit yellow. They are not that big, less than an inch in diameter. I dont know how I could have bumped the inside of my arms. They started a little bit after the beginning of my soccer season, but that might just be a coincidence. Should I be worried about this?

    1. Peter L.

I meant that they are half blue and half yellow. Also, they have been getting bigger and smaller overtime.

    2. Jacob Zipperer

      Hello Peter,

Based off of the symptoms, we strongly recommend talking to your doctor about the bruising you are experiencing. Due to their knowledge of your medical history and past conditions, they can best advise you.

I am a sixty-four year old male in overall good health. I am 5'11'' and weigh about 140 lbs. I eat mainly vegetables but also eat some cookies and chips as a snack. I suppose I don't get much protein other than deli chicken or turkey for lunch. I noticed some yellow bruises on my left leg and foot but have not banged against anything that would have caused them. Any idea what could cause them? Thanks.

  27. Tracy Elwell

My son is 13 years old and last July had major trauma to his leg after being by a motorbike. He suffered 3 open compound fractures to the tibia and fibula which were communicated and segmented. He finally stopped using a wheelchair 3 months ago and walking unaided 2 months ago now although has a long road ahead of him. However, in the last week, bruising keep appearing on his leg and after a couple of days, they go down and more appear. They don't hurt, he hasn't hit his leg or fallen or done anything dangerous because it could be disastrous for his long term recovery.

I don't like to keep contacting the consultant or our GP, I feel we have a hotline to them already, any advice.

    1. Elaine

      Hi Tracy E.
Maybe I missed it but I didn’t see a response to your post about your son’s unexplained bruising. I am not a medical professional in any way. I was just on here hoping for answers to a problem I’m having. But, I wanted to say that I really wouldn’t worry about contacting your son’s doctor too often. They want what’s best for him too and after the serious injuries he’s suffered and the long road to recovery he is still on, you should definitely contact them about any concerns you should have. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

      Best Wishes,
      Elaine

    3. Patti

      Hi
We’re you able to find out regarding the bruises..

    4. Funmi

Kyle, this used to happen to me and it lasted for some years. Mine showed up on my thighs as well. Saw a hematologist, who carried out some tests which all came back ok. He explained that it was most common with women bruising for no reason. I didn’t even realize when it stopped but I don’t get them anymore. You should see your doctor but wanted you to know that you are not alone.

  37. Brittny

Randomly last month, my pinky toe on my left foot had become numb. I didn't pay much attention to it, as I do have Raynaud's. It became more worrisome over the 3 days that it continued to persist. I did then have a bruise present, under my pinky toe, on the side of my pinky toe, and the padding underneath my pinky toe. I experienced no pain with this. It did eventually go away.
I noticed my foot beginning to bruise again in the same areas today. No numbness is present, and this time my foot does hurt at the join of your pinky toe. I don't believe its a neuroma, as these tend to grow in between digits. I have not had any changes with my medication. I do tend to bruise easily, but I at least typically know what a bruise is from. I have not changed shoes recently, and have not been wearing any odd colored socks, that may have rubbed off on my skin. Any thoughts on what this might be?

I'm in a big believer that it's something is going on with your body that you are not sure of that seems to be strange go have it checked out. At least talk to a doctor about it it never hurts to check out something. Rather be safe than sorry if it is a sign of something and you wait too long it could be too late. They now have where you can just make a phone call to a doctor and a lot of the times if it's just a question you don't get charged

    5. Toya Coleman

Talk to your PC. Anti depressants are a cause of bruising, but that’s an very unusual place. Especially on your spine. God luck & God Bless

    6. Laurie Martin

Me too! I have an oval shaped bruise in the center of my back (no trauma) and a bunch of red spots above it. So strange.

    7. Kai

      Hi Liz,

While I'm not sure what causes your bruising exactly, I will share that I also had bruising along my entire spine but without obvious acute injury like a fall. I'm 40 by the way. I realized that every time I sat and leaned back in a hard chair, my spine all the way to my tailbone and whatever bones are in the glutes would hurt. It felt better once I got up, so I never thought of it causing harm. I noticed the bruising got worse the more I sat on hard chairs (not even that hard, chairs with firm really flat cushioning bothered me too) and continued the longer I didn't stay away from sitting on hard surfaces. I started sitting only on comfortable chairs with enough cushion or stood up if no other option, and bruising began going away and is now gone. It was weird that something so minor and didn't really hurt all that much would cause such bruising when I never bruised easily before, but it seemed to be the cause. It caused such bright multicolored bruising : purple, blue, yellow, red, just a mess – looked like I was in a car accident or something. I'm very lean, so stuff hurts my bones easily. A tip I use is wearing thick hooded sweatshirts and sweatpants helps protect the spine when sitting and also protects the hip bones from pain incase of knocking into a counter or something, but that's rarely happens. However, I'm already hot all the time, so this makes me even more uncomfortable, so I only wear the thick baggy clothes when I leave the house, like to doctors appointments where I know I'll have to sit in a waiting room. I don't want to bring cushions everywhere. I feel like it would get in people's way or look like I'm thinking "your chairs aren't good enough for me, hmph!", so it's not a big deal for me to stand. I live in South Florida and get made fun of by doctors for not dressing for the season, or for dressing like a depressed person they say (whatever that means, when I've been through deep depressions, I dressed the same as usual, but whatever). So, maybe pay attention if your mattress or chairs are too firm? But obviously should ask your doctor about it. Good luck. Oh, just noticed his was from July 2019. Sorry. Well, hope it helps maybe anyway or helps some others.

I had catheterization (femoral) over 4 months ago; the bruising on my groin and thigh on both sides (even though he only entered from one side) has not gone away. There was mild pain (like a golf ball), burning pain and an aching feeling which have all subsided just a week ago but the light plum colored bruising which goes all the way back to the buttocks and 1/2 down thighs is still there. The bruising is not dark purple, its radiant plum.

I have a mark on the top of my hand at the base of my thumb. It’s about an inch long. It’s patchy and darker red like a normal bruise but it appeared randomly, has never hurt or itched, it’s not dry or bumpy, it has not changed in size or color and it’s been a few days. What could this be?

Now I have small purple red bruises on the front of my legs and forearms and been vomiting everything I eat and drink for three days now. My stomach is hurting I have blood coming from my nose.

        Hey,

I have ulcerative colitis, high liver count, chronic kidney disease , and A lot of bruising on my lower and upper legs…. did you ever find out what this was?

  68. Karla

I'm a "relatively" healthy 30yo female. I have always bruised easy. I'm always slightly anemic, I'm a bit overweight, and I have trigeminal neuralgia. I have noticed painful bruising under my eyes on my cheekbones for the past 2wks. Having atypical TN affecting my 2nd and 3rd branch, I'm used to feeling some pain under my right eye, but I've never had bilateral pain and I've NEVER had bruising. I know for a fact I wasn't bumped or injured in anyway. I figured it was the lighting or maybe even a fluke but the pain/bruises haven't gone away. Would you suggest I see my primary family medicine doctor or my neurologist. My neurologist is one of only like 3 in my county and is booked out months in advance so I'd hate to waste his or my time if this is an issue he cant help…. I can call him and ask of course but I googled my issue and this post popped up. Thanks in advance!!

      Hi Karla,

I have bruises all over my arms and legs for not reason more so inner thighs and inner arms the are all different colors i have nephropathy but also have my left leg and foot swell and hurt a lot

    1. Angela K Ayers

      Patsy,
Im not a doctor, but i had exactly what you are describing..and i went into my cardio thinking it was my chf, or neuropathy, and it was P.A.D. Now i wear TED hoses daily and (knock on wood), no edema,(swelling) leg pain, and NO MORE weird appearing bruises…i do not know what nephropathy is..but im truly sorry and i hope this helps. At least a little. Best wishes, Angela

    2. Lane

i'm 28 and just realized the same thing happen out of nowhere (two weird bruises.) …. i do sleep on my left side but in the past few days couldn't help accidentally hitting some new (not huge) boot heels against a hard bed frame. i'm wondering why i've got a random bruise on my left arm, in between the inner wrist and elbow. i'm confused too. please get in touch if you figure things out. i wish us the best!

      1. Lane

it makes sense that my muscles suck; i don't work out and the anemia doesn't help, but can anyone guess why i'm bruising on my arms (besides bed manners)?

      2. Jacob Zipperer

        Hi Lane,

We reached out to an oncology/hematology nurse practitioner on our team and here was her advice:

"Sometimes bruises come out of nowhere because we don’t always notice when or if we bumped against something or were grabbed by someone or working outside (sometimes new activities – such as yardwork after a long winter of “doing nothing”) now brings sore muscles or bumps/bruises without even realizing. If the bruising persists or enlarges without any obvious reason, best to see your primary care provider or urgent care.

        Hope that helps! – Jake

  73. Monica

About 4-5 weeks ago I noticed a bruise on my abdomen, above and to the right of my navel. It’s not painful, not even if I press on it, but it won’t go away. I’ve had no trauma to my abdomen whatsoever. The bruise is multicolored, with purple, blue, green, gray and yellow areas as if it’s trying to heal but somehow the bleeding that causes it keeps happening. I wonder what’s causing it.

    1. Samantha Leisher

      Me too

    2. Mike Milligan

I have the same bruise in the same location. No pain or discomfort. Did you get a diagnosis? Did it finally go away?

      1. Monica

Mike, it went away, but only about three more weeks after I posted here about it, and it healed at a very slow rate. All together, that bruise was there for over two months until it healed. No diagnosis so far, my doc is kind of puzzled by the whole thing. Had some blood tests, an ultrasound and a chest x-ray, was told to see an gastroenterologist and schedule a colonoscopy , but couldn’t get an appointment sooner than May, and meanwhile it all went away.

      2. Arieta

        Hi
I was diagnosed with tonsilitis and Scarlett fever. I am on my 6th day of antibiotics. With Scarlett fever I had a mild rash all of my body that burned and stung. Now I am left with these massive bruises on only my shins. They feel like bruises and are clear around the edges. They are purple but more red. They are no where else on my body except legs. Someone help me understand what this is?!

Hi, Emily. You should contact a nurse line or the doctor who prescribed you antibiotics.

I am 55 yr old female, I woke up 2 wks ago with a huge bruise on my forearm. It started clearing up from the onside out. There are two knots in the middle where it cleared. I only take a synthroid pill daily.

  77. Kauthar

    Hi,
About 3 or 4 months ago I noticed a round red patch on the back of my right lower leg, it's flat and it doesn't itch. I started to notice that it began growing, and as this happened there grew another 1 on the exact same spot on my left leg. About a month later another 1 appeared on my lower right arm and then a few smaller ones on my legs and thighs. Over time it grows and gets light in the middle with a darker circle around and a bit brown. Sometimes it gets lighter but it doesn't want to go away. I got no other symptoms.
    Thank You

    1. Emily

Hey Kauthar. I think I have the exact same problem. I'm dying to know if you've figured out what it is. I've searched everywhere online, and can find nothing that seems to be representing the issue I have. I went to the doctor right when I noticed it, and they thought it was a bug bite and prescribed me some anti-inflammatory cream, but it hasn't been working. I don't think it's a bug bite because it's been growing so much since then as well. Have any answers?

    2. Mitch

It sounds like you may have what is called Pityriasis rosea. You can goggle the images and find information about it on at mayoclinic.org.

  78. Allison Herrin

I have a bruise on my lower leg since July last year. It doesn't hurt but it will not go away either. How do I get rid of it? Why hasn't it gone away.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hey, Allison. Have you showed your doctor? You can do this at any regular appointment. This gives your doctor the visualization he/she needs to better understand what's going on and answer your questions.

    1. Daniella Stewart

      Hi,
I am wondering if you may know why the whole of my left leg and foot, from hip to toes, is reddened and bruised and painful?
It came on with food poisoning about five days ago.
This leg is normally swollen with edema, worse than the right, I am hypothyroid, on meds for that and morphine.
Symptoms don't seem to tally but definitely connected, hasn't happened before. Also sole of the foot and heel affected.

      1. Jacob Zipperer

        Hello Daniella,

We reached out to an oncology/hematology nurse practitioner on our team and here was her advice:

"This bruising should definitely be checked out soon, acute illnesses can trigger additional health problems. I recommend being seen very soon."

        Hope that helps.

        Thanks,
        Jake

  80. Chelsea

Hi, I am a 30 yr old woman and I have been getting hot and cold sweat and most recently I have a bruise on the back of my head that came outta nowhere and is very painful. I know I didn’t bump anything. Is this something random or should I be concerned?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Chelsea. It's best to contact a nurse line or your care team for these questions. They know your current medications, conditions and medical history best, which allows them to give you the most accurate answers and guidance. -Kirstie

  81. Toni Coffin

My mother is 75 and her leg really hurt all of a sudden one day. She ended up going to the ER at night and they noticed bruising on her upper groin area. She has no idea how they got there. The pain went away but she's lost muscle strength and now she cannot move that leg to the right without using her hand to place it there. Example: She can't move her leg over from gas pedal to the brake without pushing it.

    1. Cindy

She should NOT be driving at all and needs to see a Doctor right away!

    Hi,
Sometimes I have bruises appear from slight trauma to my skin. They appear blue and very tender but then fade away within the end of the day. Not Big though,I’ve had them mainly on my hands and wrist.. a few times I smacked my kid.. not that hard but that’s when it’s happened and it happened to my fingers. Another time I fell over and put my hands out to stop and it appeared on both my wrists..
Any idea what it would be and why ?

    1. Vicki

      Stop slapping your kid

      1. Katrina

For starters. I said smacked, not slapped.
And do u even parent haha sometimes once in a blue moon it’s needed, now I was on here asking about bruising that concerned me, not asking for parenting advice. If u know anything about bruising let me know or else please buzz off.

Hi. I am a 31yo female that has bruises on my lower back. I went to the doctor almost 2 months ago for severe lower pack pain after a fall and they said it was a back sprang. Gave me ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer and some stretches to do. I’ve been doing the stretches and finally used the meds when I couldn’t tolerate the pain anymore. Just a few days ago my boyfriend noticed I have bruises on my lower back and today again when he looked there was more. Any suggestions who be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I was getting bad bruising on my legs when I was on a different BC pill i was never on. Went for blood test regards these bruising. The only thing that was showing up was LOW APTT level. I got off these pills after a month, and the bruising went away. Went for 2 more blood tests and still states my APTT level is still low…. I am also concerned that my left side of my chest is inflamed do you think this has anything to do with my blood level?????

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hey, Melissa. Thank you for reaching out.

Have you shared this information with a nurse line or talked through it with your doctor? They can help you understand next steps, as they'll be able to ask questions about your medications, medical history and current conditions. -Kirstie

  87. Siv

Hi, I'm a 16yr old girl and I've had this ONE bruise in the middle, at the bottom of my ribs for weeks. I also experience internal pain down to the pit of my stomach and down the left side of my ribs sometimes.
At first I thought the mark just came from my bra discoloring my skin, but now it's dark blue and purple, and it's begun to grow. I've been at the doctors for my internal pain, but not for the bruise. Do you think they're related?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hey, Siv. This question really is better for your doctor who has your medical history. If you are a Marshfield Clinic Health System patient, you or your parent/guardian can message your doctor on My Marshfield Clinic: http://marshfieldclinic.org/mymarshfieldclinic. -Kirstie

  88. Kez

Hi – I’ve been getting small purple bruises when I definitely haven’t banged against anything. Last year, I had a very swollen ankle & a blood test suggested it was a DVT but when they scanned my leg at the hospital, there was no DVT (thankfully). Now that I’m still getting the small purple bruises, I wondered if it could all indicate something going on with my blood and these symptoms could all be related. My mum has T Cell Large Granular Lymphocytic Leukemia & my mum’s sister died of leukemia at a young age. I don’t want to look like a drama queen but should I be asking my Dr about this & maybe get a few blood tests done? Thanks for any help/advice 🙂

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Kez! It is not "dramatic" to be concerned about your health 🙂 At any time you are worried, it's important to contact a nurse line or your doctor/care team and explain your concerns. They can help you determine next steps, whether that's blood tests or another course of action.

      -Kirstie

  89. Angela

Does anyone know what causes tiny bruise clusters on the inner forearm? They pop up overnight and go away in a couple days. However, they come back without any reasoning.

  90. Elzbet Atilson

Is there any medical conditions that would cause a bruise to leave a permanent mark on the skin once the bruise has cleared up or gone away?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Elzbet. I'll reach out to some of our providers and see if they have any thoughts.

In the meantime, you may find helpful information on our story about scarring: https://shine365.marshfieldclinic.org/wellness/scars/

And, if you're concerned with your bruise, it's important you talk to your doctor.

      -Kirstie

    2. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Elzbet. One of our hematology/oncology nurse practitioners said, "I am not aware of permanent marks after bruising. This doesn't mean it is not a real phenomenon though; it's just not my area of expertise."

She mentioned dermatology possibly being a good resource for you, and added, "Skin is such a dynamic organ that some bruises can be rashes, discoloration from other abnormalities, or caused by trauma that the person does not even remember occurred. It must be very frustrating for some people who do not have insurance or a primary care provider to keep hearing, 'Go see your doctor,' but truthfully, these skin areas need to be visualized and a full health history needs to be taken. Herbal therapies or supplements can also cause bruising or interactions with medications that people do not realize. This is why it is important to bring these concerns forward to a primary care provider. It is not responsible for us to provide suggestions without context."

Best wishes, and thank you for reading Shine365. -Kirstie

  92. Matthew

Hi, I’m a 28 year old male who isn’t on any medication but is currently getting bruises on my legs. They tend to appear so far just above the knees on each leg. I know for a fact that I haven’t bumped them but starting to get a bit concerned that they have only started happening in the last couple of weeks. Should I be worried or trying to get an appointment with my doctor? I don’t want to be wasting their time for a couple of bruises if it’s nothing.

Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Matthew

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hey, Matthew. Have you tried calling your doctor or a nurse's line and explaining exactly what it is you're experiencing? Your care team can look at your medical records and help you understand whether an appointment is necessary.

I hope that helps point you in the right direction. Thank you for reading Shine365. -Kirstie

  93. Emilee

Recently i have had bad nose bleeds, but last week they finally stopped after having one, 3 or 4 times a day. Now i’m noticing random bruises pop up on the back of my thigh and my inner thigh. I know for sure i didn’t hit it or anything. All i know, is that i was itching my leg and then the best day i get this nasty bruise from it. Please tell me what should i do!?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Emilee. You should contact your doctor who knows your medical history, current conditions and medications. All of these can play into where your bruises might be coming from and if you should be concerned.

      Thank you for reading Shine365.

  94. Rails

I have a bruise on the tip of my nose, noticed it
When I had a shower tonight, never noticed it in this morning . I did not hit it or have any injury
No nose bleeds and it’s nit painful at all.
I’m wondering if I bruised it while squeezing a pimple, but it’s never happened before. It’s right in the tip of my nose.
Should I be concerned. It looks like I’ve sniffed something and left a dirty mark.

    1. Jeet

Hi did you find out what caused the bruise? I have the exact same thing on my nose now..came out of nowhere

  95. Bailey

Im 18 years old and I am experiencing severe bruising covering my legs, hips, and sometimes my stomach. I was diagnosed with chronic idiopathic urticaria and the doctor is just assuming they appear due to the hives I get daily. I was tested for leukemia and the results were negative. The bruises aren't painful, but uncomfortable and itchy. Any recommendations on a different type of doctor to see? Or any other potential causes?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Bailey. Candy, oncology/hematology, thinks the first step is your primary care provider, who may recommend you to an allergy specialist, rheumatologist or dermatologist.

Sometimes in cases of urticaria, bruising can be skin discoloration. This should be evaluated by someone who can visualize the marks.

      I hope that helps.
      -Kirstie

  96. Krystal Lopez

I experience extreme leg pain. My legs get really hot and feel very heavy accompanied with extreme pain. I notice that every time I get this type of pain, I wake up with alot of bruising on my legs. The bruises are usually on my lower legs but I also get bigger bruises on my thighs. Has anyone experienced this? Any idea what this may be the cause of it?

Hello I have bruises all on my lower back and it hurts but I never hit it or did anything. What could this be ? I’m not sure how to post a picture.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Good morning, Tiffany. Have you contacted your doctor? Sometimes bruises are related to your medical conditions or medications. Your doctor has all that information – or can obtain it from talking with you personally – to give you the best answers to your questions.

      -Kirstie

I called my doctor this morning and left a message with a nurse. I haven’t had any changes in my medications or anything?

Noticed that I had the same large bruise that is spread across my lower back and I don’t remember hitting anything either did you ever go to the doctor? What did they tell you it was from?

  99. DeAngela

I notice bruising on the back of my right thigh going to the middle of my thigh. It doesn’t hurt. I’m not sure how long it’s been there as I noticed it about 3 days ago. I have been diagnosed with Anemia in the past. I have also had the gastric sleeve surgery 2 years ago. Could this bruise come from lack of nutrients? I’m scheduled for a surgery in February and I am concerned.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, DeAngela. It is best to contact your doctor or care team when you are concerned. They know your medical history, medications and current conditions best. This allows them to provide you with the most accurate answers. -Kirstie

  100. Destiny

I have bruises on each arm on the inside of my forearms in the middle never hit them n wanted to know if it could be something serious! I have had a blood transfusion n I have really heavy periods n extremely low blood pressure n take meds to raise it n low does aspirin a day should I go to the er?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Destiny – If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911.

If this is not a medical emergency, we suggest sharing the information with your doctor. Your care team is the best resource for these questions specific to your symptoms, and they have a good understanding of your medical history, current conditions and medications, which can effect the symptoms you're experiencing.

  101. Nancy

I don't have a doctor. Haven't had health insurance since my ex divorced me after taking everything I had. The back is terribly hard to view, I use a mirror with a mirror. A while ago, I've noticed many (like 4) small "bruises" or discolorations on my upper back. Maybe the size of a nickel. Every time I check, they're there. I had a head on collision in 1993 and three slip discs, one was removed (C4-5). I still have C5-6 and T/L disc need to be removed. Could this discoloration be the results of the slipped discs? I hear cracks all the time and feel them in my back.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

      Hi, Nancy,

We cannot give individualized medical advice on our blog. Questions regarding your slipped discs and discoloration really are most appropriate for your primary care team who knows your medical history, current conditions and medications best.

I spoke with one of our neurologists. She said – in general – there is not usually a relationship between bruising/discoloration and a disc.

      -Kirstie

      1. Briana

What's the point in having the blog if you aren't giving people individual advice? If your answer to everyone is going to be to see their doctor then this entire site is a waste of existing lol. People obviously came to this site thinking they'd get real answers and you just tell them to see their doctor like they haven't thought of that??? Everything I have read as responses are things I, as a 19 year old with no medical school, could have told these people. These people want REAL answers, actual HELPFUL things. They do not want to hear "see your doctor" as that is a given. I'm assuming you have medical school background so how about you be helpful and give educated guesses at what might be wrong w the people coming to this blog asking for help. As far as I see, ALL this blog is telling people is to see a doc or telling people to be one of your patients, which I hope none took that offer seeing as your clinic doesn't actually care about people, they care about collecting that insurance. You're wasting people's time and should feel ashamed. Honestly people communicating with each other seems to hold better responses than you. If you really cared about people and their wellness then you would provide answers, even if they're wrong at least they'd be educated guesses. (which is what people want, if you all haven't gotten the hint). I'm surprised nobody's said nothing yet, this blog is a joke as are the people running it. Not even a secure site anyway, so not only are people suffering with their health but their computers are at risks for viruses from this site, how nice and oh so helpful.

  102. Brooke

So I have different shapes and coloured bruises all over my legs, one leg is worse than the other. There is no reason for them to be there as I didn’t hurt myself. I’m 21, I tend to bruise a lot for no explainable reason and I assume that might be because I’m on anti depressants but this is different? TMI but I also have blood in my stool that seems to come and go but it doesn’t seem like a big issue, after reading this I’m wondering if they’re related. Should I go to my doctor about this? I just feel stupid going in and saying that I’m there because my legs bruised.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Brooke. Your doctor should always welcome your questions and concerns; there is no reason to feel stupid.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. Are you a Marshfield Clinic Health System patient? If so, you can actually message your doctor through My Marshfield Clinic; no appointment needed: https://marshfieldclinic.org/mymarshfieldclinic. Best of luck. -Kirstie

    2. Caitlin O’Callaghan

I don’t think that’s stupid at all. I think you should go see your doctor. I’m sure it’s no big deal might just be the meds you’re on but if you have all that going on just mention it! Can’t hurt ;> good luck

  103. Rhonda Taylor

Hi I'm concerned about a big bruise on my lower back it's about the size of a baseball . I don't hit it on anything. My back had been hurting for a few weeks before it showed up and it's been there for a while now it will lighten up for a day or two and go back to being a really dark. I did have cervical cancer about 10 yrs ago and I do have low iron and have to take supplements so I'm use to minor bruises but nothing like this. Any ideas?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Rhonda – Thank you for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear about your recurring bruise.

Have you shared these symptoms and questions with your doctor? If you are a Marshfield Clinic Health System patient, you can do that quickly and securely without an appointment through My Marshfield Clinic messaging: https://marshfieldclinic.org/mymarshfieldclinic

  104. Kylee

Hi my name is Kylee and I’m 21. I've noticed that I have these red spots on my arm and idk what they’re from and I also found a bruise on the back of my arm.

  105. alex j

im relatively young (17) and i continously kept waking up with little bruisies all over my arms, most of them the size of dots. i’ve never done anything the day before or the night before to cause them forming they just sort of showed up. i didn’t think much of it until recently i woke up with significantly larger ones on my legs. i do take ibuprofen regularly due to pain in my knees, could that be the reason i have them? should i stop taking ibuprofen as much as i do?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Alex. Have you shared this concern with your parents and doctor?

It's important they're aware of the medications you're taking and any symptoms you're experiencing. With that information, your doctor can help you understand if your bruises are concerning.

      -Kirstie

  106. Donna Marie Andrade

Hi….My name is Marie. I occasionally get unexplained bruising on top of feet. Blood vessels pop easily and hurt in my hands this happens off and on. I've been told i dont have leukemia. What else could it be. I don't know if i should c my doctor just for nothing.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

      Hi, Donna Marie.

We don't know enough about your medical history, current conditions or medications to thoroughly answer your questions.

Fortunately, your doctor has this information already or can talk with you to learn more about it. Together, you and your doctor can determine whether your symptoms are concerning.

We suggest bringing these concerns to your doctor at your next appointment.

      -Kirstie

  107. Arica Lyons

Hello, I’m a 29 year old female with no history of blood disorders or anything. I always get bruises all over my body by barely even touching things or having them rest on me. These bruises also last for a month or more, should I be concerned?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Arica. Thank you for reaching out.

We suggest you ask your doctor about these bruises at your next regular appointment. It's important you bring a list of all the medications you take.

As mentioned in the article, prescription and over-the-counter medications and nutrition supplements can make you bruise more easily. Some medications and supplements associated with bruising include:

      NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen)
      Antidepressants
      Blood thinners
      Some steroids
      Vitamin E
      Fish oil

Your doctor is the best resource for this question.

hi , I have random bruises on my thighs and I’ve noticed that they’ve spread and they have little white tiny dots inside of the “ bruise “ . They’re on my inner thigh and I know it’s not trauma related . Any suggestions?

      2. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Ivey. Thank you for reaching out. Have you contacted your doctor? He/she knows your medical history and current conditions best – both which (along with medications) can play into your symptoms.

If you're waiting to see your doctor, you can try online resources like WebMD: https://symptoms.webmd.com/default.htm

  108. Abi

Hi i am 26 and i keep getting bruises all over my legs including my upper thighs. At one point i had 14 just on one leg, they start off as small purple circles an then grown into a large size bruise my legs are starting to feel soar if someone was to lean or touch them. The bruises eventually go after a few weeks but then more appear

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Abi. One reason to see a doctor about bruising is when your bruises get larger with time.

As always, it's important to ask your doctor about any concerning symptoms you're experiencing.

      Best,
      Kirstie

      1. Chloe

I fell on a section of stairs and landed on my bum, thus was 3 days ago. The bruise started as 2 small ones and is now one about 5cm wide by about 2 cm high, should i see a doctor about it?

        Hi Chloe,

      Hi ABI,
I'm wondering if you ever found out the cause of why you are bruising like that. My daughter has the same issue around her knee… we've had every blood test and scan under the sun done, and no answer. One doctor said CRPS, but I don't agree. I'm at a loss and would love to know if you found an answer. Thanks

The tops of my thighs are itchy and bruised. I have tried switched laundry soaps, put lotion on (I thought maybe I had dry skin) took allergy medication. Nothing has helped. It is a continuous itch that never goes away and the bruises range in size from small to med sized. What could this be?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Emily. This is a great question for your doctor who knows your medical history and current conditions best. If you are a Marshfield Clinic Health System patient, you can message your care team via My Marshfield Clinic: http://marshfieldclinic.org/mymarshfieldclinic

  110. John

Hi I am a 65 years old and an alcoholic. I've been drinking off and on for years, mainly vodka. But after blacking out 2 times and finding myself in an emergency room I quit for about a year and then switched to the large cans of beers. In the past 8 months I was drinking about 6 or 7 of them daily. Long story short this morning while getting dressed I found an extremely large dark purple one on my chest. I could also feel bumps and the other 2 were smaller and not as dark. I was and am worried about cirrhosis of the liver. Of course I will see my doctor. But am so concerned I've gone to the internet to get more info. Also will they go away?

If I sit for longer periods at a time with a straight posture, I get a feeling like I put Icy Hot on it but just cold. When I push on it, it still hurts like a bruise but get numb. Any ideas?

Asking for a coworker friend. It may be nothing but today my friend came into work and showed me two giant nearly identical looking purple bruises on the back of her calves/knees. Upon asking her what happened she said the only different thing is shes began working out more–specifically running on a tredmil. When she asked the physical therapist at work what he thought it may be he gave her a quizical looked and asked if her periods were regular. She lied and said yes, even though she recently had an abortion and they have not been regular at all. Could this be serious for her? What does a regular period have to do with random bruising? Actually am pretty worried–they were nasty looking bruises.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Sherry. It's very important your coworker friend is truthful with her health care providers. They know her best – current medications, medical history, etc. – and therefore can best answer her questions.

We cannot give individualized medical advice on our blog. If your coworker friend is a Marshfield Clinic patient, she could directly message her provider on My Marshfield Clinic to ask again about her bruises: http://marshfieldclinic.org/mymarshfieldclinic

I've reached out to our providers to ask how periods and bruising may be related. I'll let you know as soon as I know more.

      -Kirstie

    2. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Sherry. Here's what Candy could provide in response to, "What does a regular period have to do with random bruising?" She also shared some additional insight about abortions in general.

"Sometimes heavy periods can be a symptom of a bleeding disorder as well as unusual bruising. Another question is if the abortion was spontaneous or planned: If spontaneous, with new unusual bruising, she needs to see a primary care provider or OB/GYN as these could be symptoms of an underlying bleeding/clotting disorder. If the abortion was planned, the question may be whether the bruising is related to any positioning she had during the procedure. She should get these bruises checked out, and be seen by a provider for additional health history and work-up. Based on what we know, this sounds like she needs to be seen very soon."

I just noticed I have 3 round bruises on my stomach they’re in a perfect triangle with another spot appearing on the other side?

    2. Nikki

It could easily be a hematoma. I had a 4 wheeler wreck in 2013 and still have a hematoma to this day. It could be there for the rest of my life.

That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking! Hey they have to get those numbers up to make the blog pay off.. But I don’t fault Kirsten S. or Shine 365. I have two huge dark bruises on either of my legs in the exact place, however I have absolutely no recollection of hurting myself which I’m sure I would considering there on both legs. They have also because bigger and darker as times gone on yet they don’t hurt the same way a usual bruise would so I’m not sure if I’m worrying to much or if it is something different

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Madi. If you are worried or concerned, we recommend reaching out to your primary care provider. -Kirstie

I’m concerned because one first randomly appeared on the back of my thigh about 2 days ago, and this morning I woke up with another. Exact same colour same part of my thigh but on the other leg.
Have you been to see a doctor regarding yours?
If so, could you please let me know if I should be concerned?
      Thanks x

  123. Kim Campbell

I sleptwalked last Friday night and completely missed a flight of 4 stairs, landing hard on my bottom on the landing of the steps. Saturday morning I had a bruise already forming on my left butt cheek with numbness on part of it. Today (Tuesday) the bruise is awful colored of dark blue and purple. There is still one area of it that is numb. The bruise is about the size of my hand. It hurts to sit down on a hard surface (toilet seat), to get in and out of a vehicle because of the weight distribution. I did ice it Saturday and Sunday. I am a Type 1.5 diabetic (later onset, insulin dependent). My concern now is two-fold: #1: Is there a cause to be worried about a blood clot forming? #2: Why is an area of it numb? I have had other bruises and they take awhile to heal due to my diabetes but this one is different.(My age is 49.)

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Kim. I'm sorry to hear about your fall.

    2. Katrina

I am a nutritionist and happened to see this blog when a friend was reading through the comments. To all of you who have concerns about unexplained bruising…it can be a sign of candida (yeast) overgrowth in your system or an underlying bacterial infection…both will cause random bruising on the skin. If you eat wheat, make sure the product does not contain yeast…also avoid all aged cheeses, chocolate, citric acid (it is made with aspergillus mold), cream of tartar, malted barley flour…and basically any product that is fermented because fermentation causes yeast to grow rampant. Also…use patchouli oil and bergamot oil…these 2 essential oils in particular are antifungal and when applied topically to the skin (just several drops a day) will kill the internal candida albicans bacteria. Also, take one teaspoon of coconut oil daily…only unrefined and cold pressed (do not buy anything else because it will contain chemicals and do not buy MCT oil because the lauric acid has been removed). Also, take 500 mg (one capsule) of cinnamon bark extract daily…only the Solaray brand because it is cinnamon verum (ceylon cinnamon)…do not take cassia cinnamon! If you follow this regime, the unexplained bruising will stop. Candida is very serious and can grow to magnitude proportions in the body when it reaches a certain level…so avoid all yeasts and molds in fermented foods. I hope I have been of help to all of you.

      1. Eugenia Munoz

Hi Katrina my name is Eugenia i saw your comment i have the same problem unexplained bruises but doctors won't listen they say im fine but i dont feel well at all have all these symptoms and they are interfering with my life to pain from weak and dizziness bloating inflammation digestion ovarian cysts and infections of urine and candida that seems not to go away ,weight loss sorry bother you but maybe you can give me advice? ??thanks

      2. Linda Williams

Thank you, your suggestion worked for me. Much appreciated.

    3. Amy

Kim, it also sounds like you pinched a nerve which may cause numbness. Medical doctors normally will x-ray and may suggest physical therapy. However, I have found Chiropractic to work well. I wish Doctors and Chiropractors would work as a team. Chiropractic will x-ray and gently adjust your body and massage would help get blood flow back to that area. I wish you the best!

  124. Michelle

When I was a teen I bruised real easy. I didn't worry about it. Like most teens I was very active and didn't take care of myself the best. At a checkup the doctor noticed my bruises and being mandatory reporters had to do testing. If there is a true problem, I believe doctors will find it. Within hours, my doctor had me sent to the hospital for multiple testing and oncology/hematology. I was diagnosed with multiple diseases and bloodcloting disorders within weeks and I didn't even realize I was sick. Your doctor is the best resource!!

  125. Lauren

Hi …today when the family were together for Thanksgiving, my 24 yr. daughter said she keeps getting unexplained bruising. She had very wide-leg dress pants and when she raised the material I was shocked. Showing me both her legs, shin to thigh she was covered in bruises. Then I asked her show me her arms and back, bruises as well but not like her legs. I have never seen anyone with that amount of bruising. The bruises were more brownish in color. I told her to get blood work done ASAP. It is really crazy and to be honest ..I am scared to find out what is going on. What can this be?

Lauren, did your daughter ever figure out what the bruising was caused by? I’m having the same type of problem with bruising. Huge bruises 6-7inches long all over upper thighs etc. My mom was recently visiting me and was horrified when she saw my legs.

  126. Elizabeth Downing

My 15 year old daughter has been getting unexplained bruises on her stems, legs, and torso for 2 months. It comes and goes and she's had blood work done to rule out Leukemia and Vin Willebrands as well as just complete blood work panel, all negative and normal. Do you have any ideas what could be the cause? She feels fine, the bruises do hit have pupura or cleat edges. She's sick of getting g these random unsightly bruises and I'm still concerned. Thanks.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Elizabeth. Your daughter's care team knows her best. We strongly suggest you continue working with them. We do not know your daughter's medical history well enough and cannot give individualized medical advice on our blog.

  127. Mark

I was sitting in my chair watching T.V. when my arm began to burn. The muscle began to spasm and O started to see skin turning red. Went to sleep with it still tender and woke next morning to the start of a rather large bruise. Muscle is still sore with bruise getting darker. What happened or may be happening?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Mark. If you are concerned, please talk to your doctor. We do not know enough about your medical history and current conditions or medications, and we cannot give individualized medical advice on our blog.

I am 32 and disabled due to muscle bone and joint deterioration, and am in limbo waiting for double hip replacements because the drs say I'm too young for the procedure due to the inability of the replacement mechanisms to last. But my question is I am experiencing bruising sensation in the epidermis in both legs from my hips to my knees with no bruising or trauma. What could be some causes of this sensation?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Chris. Have you spoke with your doctor about these symptoms? He/she knows you best and will be most helpful to your specific questions.

Thank you for reading Shine365. -Kirstie

I have purple stretch marks on my right leg near the knee area and there is no pain in it. I just watched them by chance ao i am worried about that. Is this anything serious or not?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Rabia. We cannot give individualized medical advice on this forum. Have you shared your question with your doctor? If not, it sounds like a good question for your next regularly scheduled appointment.

Hi, i'm currently pregnant and got blood work done 8 days ago once the lady placed the needle in my arm she said it wasn't releasing blood she missed the vein and instead of pulling it out to try again she started to wiggle the needle left to right and finally said okay i found the vein but it is coming really slow its gonna take awhile… after leaving i got a huge bruise on the top of my arm where she placed the needle it's at least 2 inches long and hasn't gotten better; it started off not that dark and as days go on its like dark purple almost as if blood in under my arm leaking and its black and green. I've never had a bruise this bad in my life and never after getting blood work i've shown a few family members and everytime i show someone they freak and can't believe how bad it is. Is this normal? Should i be concerned that the vien may still be leaking? Should i call my doctor? Thank you!

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Mikayla. We suggest you call your doctor or the lab where you received your blood work. They are best able to answer your questions according to your medical history and current conditions.

      Best wishes. -Kirstie

  131. Carlos

I started waking up with bruises on my arm after one night of sleep. I don’t really know what to do cause they are on both of my forearms, and like round.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Carlos. As the article mentions, it's not uncommon for unexplained bruising to appear on the arms. Sometimes only a slight bump results in a nasty bruise.

If you become concerned, it's important to contact your doctor.

      -Kirstie

  132. Maddy

Hey, I’m 12 years old and have been getting some bruises for no reason.. I’m a huge hypochondriac and I’m having anxiety attacks I’m scared.. what could this be they are not very small and blackish purple the smallest one I have is a little bigger than a pencil eraser I’m really scared.. what could this be

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Maddy. Have you showed your parents your bruises?

Bruises can mean a variety of things, or nothing at all. If you're worried, your parents can help you make an appointment with your doctor, or you can ask about the bruises at your next regular appointment.

      -Kirstie

  133. Erinn

What I was looking for info about is the kind of bruising that can happen with the slightest rub, scratch across any part of hands, feet, fingers.
A few years ago I noticed this happening more often. It happens quick and feels like an itch first but then hurts terribly and the pain and then the pain suddenly stops, leaving a very dark bruise.
Had out happen in the middle of the bottom of my foot with my shoe On. Maybe I stepped the wrong way. Is there a name for this kind of thing?
Tonight it was a painful bruise on a toe

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Erinn. I asked Candy about your concerns and symptoms. She suggests bringing this to the attention of your primary care provider who knows your current medication use, medication history and conditions.

If you do not have a primary care provider, you can find one who best fits your needs here: https://www.marshfieldclinic.org/Specialties/primary-care. He/she becomes familiar with your health and can refer you to specialists as needed.

I hope that helps, and thank you for reading Shine365. -Kirstie

I was bitten by a dog on the upper calf 9 days ago. There were 2 very small punctures. The area swelled instantly, was hard, and bruising appeared. Now, more than a week later the bruise goes from the injured area to the ankle. It is green and about 3/4 of an inch wide. Is this normal?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Sue – I apologize; we cannot give individualized medical advice on our blog. I do suggest you contact your doctor if you're concerned or if your bruise shows any of these signs and symptoms:

      1. You have systemic symptoms like fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes or unintentional weight loss.

      2. Bruises look like big purple spots with clear edges, and you’re younger than 65.

      3. Bruises look like tiny dots.

      4. Bruises are getting larger with time.

      5. You notice a lot more bruises than normal or bruises in unusual places.

      6. Bruising occurs along with other bleeding.

      Best wishes. -Kirstie

    2. Jessica RN

Bruises travel with gravity and yes they usually turn green. This all sounds very normal. But with a puncture from a dog you should make sure the dog has had its vaccines and that you have had a tetanus shot recently.

  135. Ashley

I woke up with one bruises with I thought was something normal , but then i got more on my thighs. It seem like it has spread. Should i got to the doctor or it can be something normal I'm 17.

Hi, Ashley. We cannot give individualized medical advice on our blog. You can try a symptom checker like the one found on WebMD (https://symptoms.webmd.com/default.htm), though we strongly suggest you see your doctor when anything unusual or concerning arises.

Periodically, I’ve been getting small, pencil eraser size, perfectly circular bruises on my arms for no reason. They take quite a while to fade and seem to leave the skin different than before. I’m in my late 50’s. Is this normal?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Thank you for the question, Casey. Unfortunately, the blog isn't intended for medical advice and we don't know enough about your medical history or current conditions to say if this is "normal." So I had an arthroscopic surgery on my hip 9 months ago to fix a labral tear. Recently I started running/jogging and I started by jogging slowly and taking it easy. But a few days ago I woke up and there are bruises around where the incisions are and my hip has started hurting A LOT. What should I do? I know I need to call my doctor soon but first I need to know if I should be worrying?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Kayla – You're exactly right. It is best to contact your doctor who knows your medical history and current conditions best. Are you a Marshfield Clinic Health System patient? If so, you can message your doctor via My Marshfield Clinic: http://marshfieldclinic.org/mymarshfieldclinic

Hi I have the exact same thing going on, did you ever find anything out about them?

      1. Curious

Hi! Same. Underside of arm and forearm and back of my hip. Looks like someone poked or grabbed me. No one has touched me, zero possible ways I could have done this.

Something strange is going on here.

Since you cant offer medical advice, do you have experiences where an influx of people have complained about this and then replied with anything the medical community has diagnosed them with?

  140. Paulette

Hi, I have a large ugly black bruise on the inside of my lower thigh. There's no pain, it didn't bleed and it is not swollen. I do not remember bumping into anything, it just appeared. What could have caused it?

Hi, Paulette. We have no way of knowing for certain what caused your bruise and cannot provide individualized medical advice on our blog. As always, if you are concerned, we do recommend you talk to your doctor who knows your medical history and current conditions best.

I have what looks like a bruise under my pubic hair with no pain, swelling or cause. I am not sexually active and except for the appearance, I would have never known I have this bruise? It started out very light in color about 2 weeks ago, and now it is a dark blue. It's in such an awkward place, there is no way I could've been hurt or pinched there. There is, and never has been any pain. I have no other symptoms and I feel completely fine. What could this be?

Great, I'm always bruised and just noticed today a whole string of little dot bruises are all over my upper left thigh going up in a like a constellation. I didn't bang it, give birth, had an injury or anything even close to that. I've been doing squat exercises every day but that's the only thing I've been doing. Is this something I should be concerned about? I do have fair skin.

Hi, I'm not a doctor, I've just been looking up my own weird bruising issue and read that sometimes bruises can appear around insect bites if the person's allergic to that insect. Also, bed bugs sometimes leave a string of tiny dot bites. Just throwing that out there! Hope you figure(d) it out 🙂

  145. Melissa

I was having a shower and I washed my right leg, or went to before I found 2 random bruises. One near the knee, one a bit lower, but I don't recall doing anything to my leg.

  146. Mak

I have had 5 unexplained huge bruises to appear on both my upper legs within the last week. What could cause this?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Thanks for reading Shine365 and reaching out, Mak.

Per the story, bruising easily usually isn’t a serious problem, but Strey recommends calling your health care provider if any of these descriptions apply to your bruises.

The story goes into further details about these descriptions.

I woke up this morning with a huge bruise on the back of my left thigh. I have no idea how it got there and I didn't fall or hit it. About A month and a half or two months ago I sprained my ankle really bad and the bruising is gone from it but my ankle is still swollen. I don't remember it taking this long to heal the last time I did that. Idk if the two or related some how but this bruise on my thigh wasn't there yesterday and this morning it's awful.

I don't know what is this. I don't know if this is a bruise or something, but it's just like a bump skin when you get bump your head into something. And it gets me worried because it's getting little bigger since i got this and so hard to walk easily. It's on my legs near where my sensitive part. I didn't do anything or bump into something but it hurts, it feels like you have a bruise on the eye when someone punched you. And i feel the pain getting up into my waistline and the bump thing. Sorry for my explanation.

Fell and hit my wrist a year ago swelling and the pain went away after 1 1/2 months. I still have a bruise on my wrist where it hit the metal counter it's been a year is that normal to still have the bruise for that long?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Amy. We cannot give individualized medical advice on our blog. Candy said, generally speaking, "It is very atypical to have a 'bruise' after a year post-injury. Sometimes discoloration can persist. This is a good question for your primary care provider. If there is associated pain or swelling or functional problems, then you should be seen sooner, rather than waiting until your next visit with a primary care provider."

Not seeing this type of bruising exactly. A large red abdominal spot appears in the morning. By late evening it is a large bruise. 4 months later and the bruise, same shape & size, is still present. I'm not finding exactly what this could be signs of. No trauma or injuries of any sort. Strictly internal. Just the fact that it has stayed in the same exact spot with exact parameters for such a stretch of time seems strange. Could you either tell me potential causes for this or point me in the right direction for finding these answers? Thanks!

Hello, I too have seen a line of 5 small bruises along my left thigh. They appeared at once from my knee to my groin. Is your situation similar?

  157. Mark McLean

I have a purple bruise at my left waistline above my hip. It appeared about 4/5 days ago and is getting larger. It started about size and shape of an sideways almond, and now about a small egg. The most unusual feature is a pea-sized hard bump in middle of the bruise and lighter shade. There’s no pain.

  158. Ted krittenbrink

My girlfriend noticed a bruise the size of a fist on my abdomen. About an hour or two later another one just above it. Then a couple hours later, the entire abdomen above the navel appears to be bruising. There's been no trauma and no pain. What could this be caused by?

Definitely get checked right away if you are having that kind of bruising. It might mean low blood levels (low hemoglobin) which can be caused by disease, internal bleeding or anemia, look up ITP. Someone I know had this happen and they had ITP, a life-threatening blood disorder. I saw their bruises and noticed they kept increasing without any outside cause. It can be very serious if not treated.

    4. DD

you better get it checked out. It may be leukemia.

I had 5 bruises on my left mid back. Thought My husband did it while im sleeping but he swore he didnt do ot now im very concern. They dont hurt. But i wonder where it came from

  160. Traci Bright

Several months ago we noticed several bruises on both my husband’s forearms and biceps. The bruises seem to be in the same place on both arms. He went to the doctor but received no explanation. I was wondering if you could give any indication as to what the culprit may be.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Traci. As mentioned in the story, it is not uncommon to see random bruising on the limbs.

"Unexplained bruising usually appears on the arms and lower legs. Sometimes only a slight bump results in a nasty bruise."

We cannot provide individualized medical advice on this forum and do suggest your husband ask his primary care provider about his bruising at his next regular appointment. I just woke up the other day with 4-5 little round black and blues in a straight line from my upper outside thigh to my knee. That are about 2 inches apart and they don’t hurt when I touch them… They are just there… What could that mean

Some time back, while taking a simple walk, suddenly I had this horrid pain in my thigh. When I got home, it was a bruise the size of my palm. Yesterday while doing light housework, I had that same sudden pain, only on the side of my knee. There is a bruise and the knee is now popping with every step. Should I be concerned?

  164. Lauren

I have about 11 bruises; all around the same size, in a circle shape on the back of my left lower leg. There’s a few the same on the back of right lower leg too. I have literally no idea how they got there. It’s the weirdest thing because they all look the same and are pretty close together.

Has anyone else had anything similar?

    1. Gillian Hochmuth

I experienced something similar when we moved into a different house. I had these strange long, thin, line-like bruises across my upper thighs. Multiple bruises at different stages of healing. Now I bruise easily but was concerned about the repeated bruising because I had a sister with ITP as a child. Then one day it literally hit me, when I was rushing from the baby’s room to the kitchen & ran right into the dining room table. I’d been running into every night when I was taking care of the baby but my sleep deprived mind didn’t remember by morning what happened. I moved the table over 6” to the left & the bruises finally all healed.

    2. Cassie

I have the exact same issue. My right leg all the way around it. Im 36 & they will not go away, I'm very insecure about them.

    3. Anna Hystad

Did you go to the doctor? Was anything wrong? I’m rly curious bc my sister has the same thing on the front of her legs

    4. Michele Washington

I have the big bruise on the back of my calf on the right side.
I had it on both but the left side went away. I didn't bump it and yes its the weirdest thing I've had it for about a month.

  165. Cameron B

So I have been experiencing some bruising on my lower legs, upper thighs, inner thighs, outer thighs, my back, my neck, and the sides of my abdominal region. I was wondering if you possible had a reason for all this bruising. I also don’t recall running into anything because I have a very low pain tolerance so I would have known if I have run into anything.

  166. Noah

Can you bruise a bruise, can you have a bruise then get another bruise?

    1. Noah

As in can you get another bruise on top of a bruise.

      1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Noah. I shared your question with Candy. She said,

"There are many capillaries on the skin, so even though a bruise is evident, if the same area gets struck again or the capillaries don’t fully heal from the first damage, the bruise can appear as though it is a 'bruise on a bruise.' I would associate this with an event where the area is damaged repeatedly – ie: frequent or repetitive employment duties, athletes who use equipment, or if the tissue is friable and not able to fully heal due to poor wound healing or some medication use (such as aspirin or blood thinner use or steroids that can thin the skin). If this happens frequently, it should be evaluated by a medical professional."

Thank you for reading Shine365. -Kirstie

  167. Hannah

Iv been experiencing red scratches (under the skin because skin is not broken) and strange THIN LONG bruses for the past year, most the time I wake up with them and their always in the same place, the upper thigh either behind or to the side, I would know whether I clunked my self as I have a very low pain threshold and simple knocks to the leg leaves me in agony and holding my self for quite a few minutes (probably a sign of Fybro) but it’s just so suspicious Iv even started a photo diary of them. I suffer chronic fatigue & brain fog, no other illnesses not on any medication, I’m 26 and have a 7 year old, I walk a lot for work as a domiciliary Care worker as I don’t drive so live quite a healthy life style… I’m just lost as to what causing it? I’m not aware of family members suffering with bleeding problems, but like my self my mum also bruises easily and she also has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (I haven’t) . I mean genuinely it got the point I was recording my sleep to see if anything was happening to me in the night either by my self unknowingly or by ‘something’ else. I’m not crazy I sware haha. Just trying to find answers.

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Hannah. Thank you for reaching out. It's great you're keeping a photo diary of these instances. What a good idea. Have you shared that diary with your primary care provider? He/she will be most familiar with your medical history and current conditions.

  168. Porsche

My fiancé gets bruising on the outer part of her leg near her knee…She doesn't know it is there until I point it out…what could that be?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Porsche – Thank you for your question. Candy said bruising on the legs is not uncommon, "Unexplained bruising usually appears on the arms and lower legs. Sometimes only a slight bump results in a nasty bruise."

Additionally, some prescription and over-the-counter medications and nutrition supplements can make you bruise more easily; those medications are noted in the story.

If your fiance is experiencing the above six symptoms along with bruising, it is best to see a doctor.

I have developed completely different skin types of black and blue on my right breast, on my left lower shin there is a four inch
rug burn, black and blue marks on my feet from the toes up to my ankles on both feet, red skin on my elbow and lesions on my lips. I have not been physically abused, fallen, or have pain and itching on any of these sites. My knee however has no strength to hold me up and is in excruciating pain. I see that your comment is a while back, but if your bruise is still there that can be a sign of internal bleeding on the abdomenal area… You should check a doctor immediately.. especially if it is for unknown cause.

      1. Carrie

Reading all of these stories & comments, I've had very similar symptoms. I am not a doctor or anything, but have several health issues and wanted to offer my personal opinion based on my own experiences. I would definitely contact your primary care provider & get some lab work going. Anemia is not something to ignore. Luckily, if your anemic, it's an easy fix. Also, because of the itching as well, I'd have your doctor check your kidneys & liver. Medications can also cause itching like you experienced. If the bruises continue and it's not related to anemia or vitamin deficiencies, I highly recommend & encourage you to see a Rheumatoid and hematology physicians. I have a rare immune disorder called Antiphospholipid syndrome, which makes me more prone to blood clots, infections, & even cancers, along with many more symptoms associated with it that can be debilitating sometimes & even dangerous. It caused me cancer, hypertension, a clot, & stroke. Unfortunately, I was born with it & never knew. Had I? My life would've been much better. So please, don't ignore your symptoms, like I did for many years. Listen to your body, and insist your physician find the underlying cause of your symptoms. These days, you HAVE to be your own advocate. Good luck to you & I hope you're feeling better.

  175. Jasmine Meraz

Hello, it’s been happening for as long as I can remember, sometimes in my sleep, unexplainable itching that won’t go away and I can’t stop scratching, only on my upper thighs and behind my knees. Sometimes I’ll wake up and notice these CRAZYYYYYY big bruises and I’m aware it’s from scratching bc in some occasions you can see where my finger nails were steady digging in. Thankfully I have solar nails on so I’m not cutting thru my skin, but that has happened also. And it’s like once I start scratching I literally can’t stop and my legs get hot. What throws me off is when I do it in my sleep. I believe I’m slightly anemic from what I remember. I weigh about 97lbs and am in my early 20s. Idk what could factor into it so I’m just throwing that out there

    1. Ann

I ended up on this website because I woke up this morning with bruising on my abdomen. But it wasn’t preceded by any pain or itching like when I get in my size or my fingers or toes. And I’ve never had a bruise on my abdomen without injury.

Anyway, I get this too in my thighs and it feels just like you say. The bruising is preceded by crazy itching. My thought as well look like somebody has kicked the crap out of me. As far as I can tell it’s spontaneous ecchymoses. My drs have not been concerned because I have Ehlers Danlos. It gets worse with some things, like too many walnuts, Vitamin E or D. Hope that helps.

    2. Lynnette

Wow, the same exact thing here. Have you been to the doctor to find out the cause?

    3. Chuey

My first thought is your laundry routine. I noticed similar symptoms long ago, and since i started double rinsing my clothing (especially PJs because you're in them for extended period of time with the fabric right against the skin). I often will add vinegar (a cup or so of white vinegar) to the first rinse, then the second rinse to rinse out the vinegar. It cuts all soap residue and down the drain it goes. This also applies to your sheets and your towels; we don't realize the contact we have with these, and rinsing out every speck of detergent helped me immensely. Another thought is the possibility of a candida (yeast) overgrowth, the same thing that causes a vaginal infection, but the vaginal is more local. If it is a skin yeast "infection" you could try taking Acidophilus caplets, the yeast do not like it. Never hesitate to visit your Doctor, though, because she can put your mind at ease, which is worth a lot.

Oh, for immediate relief, slather on some Sarna or Gold Bond lotion right before hitting the sheets, and that might be all you need. Be Well.

    4. Sheila Snow

This is exactly what I have been experiencing. Bruising on upper thighs and very itchy skin on my upper thighs and behind my knees. Did you get any answers yet as to a cause?

  177. Jason R.

I've developed bruises on both arms, both in the same place. Upper bicep. Been there a couple of days, non trauma related. Today I noticed another bruise upper chest area. Again, non trauma related. Any ideas?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Jason. Unfortunately it's difficult for us to know why your bruises might have developed without knowing your current medications, medical history or conditions, and we cannot provide individualized medical advice on this forum.

As mentioned in the story, bruising easily usually isn’t a serious problem, but Strey recommends calling your health care provider if any of these descriptions apply to your bruises.

If you are a Marshfield Clinic patient, consider using My Marshfield Clinic to message your care team about your bruises: https://www.marshfieldclinic.org/mymarshfieldclinic.

I hope that helps, and thank you for reading Shine365. -Kirstie

      1. Liz Voght

I was getting purpura on the back of my hands and my forearms only. Whenever I reached in a drawer and grabbed something I'd lightly hit the top portions of my hands and arms and then all of a sudden, without feeling like anything hit me I'd notice a purple spot or bright red spot underneath my skin. I am in my mid 60s and it finally dawned on me that a vitamin C deficiency always caused bruising. For years I have just taken vitamin C for regular bruising and it went away. This time in my life I was taking 1,000 mg pills of different manufacturer's and it was not working to fix my bruising. What I found out is that when we get older we do not assimilate our vitamins like we did when we were younger. I found a vitamin C called Lipospheric Vitamin C in packets. It is expensive, but it has worked to stop this bruising problem I had. If you go to youtube you can make something called Liposomal Vitamin C. This mixture gets the vitamin C into the small intestine where you can absorb it if you are having a problem like the Lipospheric C does. They are the same ingredients.

    2. Sharyn Pavloski

      Hi Jason,,,
I've been having alot of unexplainable bruising as well
I'm a cancer & lupus patient & see a Rhematolologist (who specializes in blood & blood disorders).
U might want to make an appt w/one in ur area & have a CBC (I think that's what it is) count. They test ur blood.
In my case, so far it has been found I have a rare platelet condition & now I have a low platelets count.
In which ,,, my levels r tested every 3 months to make sure they don't get below the levels to where transfusion is needed.
Hope this may help!!! Good luck to u!
god bless u & ur health!
Also, good to have as much family history as u can. Genetics play a huge part in our health issues
