Sleep medicine services have expanded across Marshfield Clinic Health System locations providing access to state-of-the-art sleep lab technology. “It is essential to provide access to the highest quality of care for our patients close to home and in our communities,” said Janelle Sharma, D.N.P., M.B.A., Neuroscience service line administrator, “Growing our sleep medicine program is essential for diagnosing many conditions that can impact patient’s lives.”
Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua celebrated a grand opening for a four-bed sleep lab in the fall of 2021. Staffed with board-certified polysomnography technologists, this addition provides access for patients living in and around the Minocqua service area. Amit Biswas, M.D., Minocqua sleep lab medical director; and Ann Clabots, certified registered nurse practitioner, provide care to the community.
“Sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea, are very common medical problems and left untreated have a lot of medical comorbidities,” said Dr. Biswas. “There is an increased risk of stroke and heart disease, which can be catastrophic for some patients. Sleep studies can help in diagnosis and treatment of these medical issues, preventing potential long-term complications and disability.”
Marshfield Medical Center-Neillsville recently opened a two-bed sleep lab. Previously, Neillsville area patients had to travel to Marshfield to have studies conducted. Sleep medicine providers in Neillsville include Hema Murali, M.D., pediatric neurologist and sleep medicine specialist, and Prompan Mingbunjerdsuk, M.D., starting in 2022.
“The new lab will address the shortage of sleep study services in the region as well as offer comprehensive sleep medicine services locally in Neillsville,” said Jaime Boero, M.D., sleep medicine director. “We’re excited to add these services in our new state-of-the-art medical campus, providing easy access for residents close to home.”
Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield upgraded its sleep lab to include all new hardware, software and beds. This new software will provide the opportunity to share resources and enhance system integration.
Many system sleep labs, including in Marshfield and Weston, are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a prestigious designation among sleep labs in the United States. Minocqua and Neillsville are on the path to accreditation.
Health System sleep labs provide a full range of services, including overnight sleep studies, multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance of wakefulness tests (MSLT). These tests can help diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia and narcolepsy and understand their cause and severity. Services are available in Eau Claire, Marshfield, Minocqua, Neillsville, Rice Lake and Weston and soon, expanding to Park Falls and Ladysmith.
