When an ankle sprain occurs, the first step towards recovery is first-aid treatment using M.I.C.E., a series of treatments that include motion, ice, compression and elevation designed to reduce swelling in the ankle.
After ankle pain and swelling have receded, usually within five to seven days, recovery exercises should focus on:
- Range of motion
- Strength
- Balance
- Return to play
