A new lease on life: One patient’s life-changing weight-loss story

Beth Callow didn’t know if she could go on any longer. She didn’t want to. Struggling with a significant weight problem and severe episodes of pancreatitis, Beth rarely left home. She was in so much pain that, at times, all she could do was lie on the floor in agony.

That was then. Now, Beth has lost 150 pounds and has never had more energy or zest for life. She recently rode on an airplane for the first time in 30 years. She’s participating in 5K races and frequenting Lambeau Field to watch her beloved Packers.

Before losing the weight, Beth struggled to make it through each day. Now, she can’t wait to see what the future holds.

This is the story of how Beth Callow got her life back.

Great story and I am proud that Beth accomplished her weight loss. Would like to know what she did to get there. Was disappointed that nothing was said about how she accomplished her goal.

Hi, Nancy. Beth changed her eating habits to a well-balanced diet and made exercise a part of her daily life. As mentioned in the video, she's pushed herself to participate in 5Ks and similar events. -Kirstie

Do I need to go through a doctor to get a weight loss plan? Do most insurances pay for it?

    1. Kirsten Shakal, Shine365 Editor

Hi, Linda. I spoke with Dr. Bekkum who worked with Beth. He said you should talk to your primary care provider regarding health changes for weight loss. You might also ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist who can help create a meal plan based on your health needs.
