Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery (MIGS) is a modern way to treat various gynecological conditions with less disruption to your body. This type of surgery uses special tools and techniques to perform procedures through small cuts, usually less than an inch long.
“With its many benefits, including less pain, faster recovery and smaller scars, MIGS is a popular choice for many women needing gynecological surgery,” said Rebecca Downs, M.D., OB-GYN with Marshfield Clinic Health System and who also has focused board certification in MIGS. “As technology and techniques continue to improve, MIGS will likely become even more effective, providing better outcomes for women.”
What is MIGS?
MIGS includes different types of surgeries designed to treat gynecological conditions with minimal trauma. Common techniques include laparoscopy, vaginal laparoscopy surgery, hysteroscopy and robotic-assisted surgery. These methods allow your surgeon to operate with precision and minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.
Benefits of MIGS
- Less pain and discomfort: With smaller cuts, you’ll feel less pain and discomfort after the surgery.
- Faster recovery: You can expect to stay in the hospital for a shorter time and get back to your normal activities quicker than with traditional open surgery.
- Lower risk of complications: The minimally invasive nature of these procedures reduces your risk of infections and other problems.
- Smaller scars: Smaller cuts mean less visible scars, which many patients prefer.
Conditions treated with minimally invasive surgery
MIGS can be used to treat a wide range of gynecological conditions, including:
- Endometriosis: A condition where tissue like the uterus’ inner lining – the endometrium –ends up outside the uterus, causing pain and possibly affecting fertility.
- Fibroids: Noncancerous growths in your uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain.
- Pelvic pain: Chronic pain in your pelvic area, often linked to conditions like endometriosis.
- Abnormal uterine bleeding: Including heavy or irregular menstrual periods.
Recovery after surgery
“One of the best things about MIGS is the easier recovery,” Dr. Downs said. “You’ll often go home the same day or after a short hospital stay, and many of my patients are back to their normal lives within a few weeks.”
The recovery process is smooth because there is less need for pain medication and fewer risks of complications after this less invasive procedure.
